There is an abundance of misinformation on Cannabis in the popular media and many healthcare providers are, unfortunately, unaware of the effects of the endogenous cannabinoids and phytocannabinoids on human physiology. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) influences many tissues and pathways including immune function, metabolism and neurological tone. Curiously, most medical schools, to this day still do not cover the ECS, despite its elucidation in a number of chronic diseases, including cancers. In this intensive, we will cover the physiology of the ECS, and then take that knowledge into understanding Cannabis. A detailed focus on THC, CBD and Cannabis extracts will look at their influence in many conditions such as mood disorders, seizures, cancers and the neuroprotective activity of both THC and CBD. We will also dissect the chemistry of Cannabis including the cannabinoids, as well as the terpenoids and flavonoids and examine the extraction and the stability of these compounds. The safety of Cannabis will also be discussed and the potential for use and abuse. This will be a four-hour intensive on Cannabis and its effects on physiology.
